Magsaysay Future Engineers/Technologists Award

The Magsaysay Future Engineers/Technologists Award aims to encourage young Filipino students to pursue a career in science, engineering, and technology and to recognize outstanding research outputs on engineering and technology at the collegiate level.

Candidate Qualification:

• Filipino citizen
• Bachelor of Science (BS) student or recent graduate with research/study/thesis on engineering sciences and technology
• Must not have graduated with BS degree before October 1 prior to the year of the award
• Of good moral character
• Able to present the research/study/thesis output during the paper presentation, which will be scheduled.

The competition is open to BS students enrolled, or graduated within the recent twelve months, in an engineering or related technology-oriented program (refer to Annex A for the non-exclusive listing of possible programs). Candidates from other STEM programs may also be considered, provided that their research work is technology-oriented. Areas of study should fall within the priority areas of the Department of Science and Technology.

Annex A: STEM Programs in the Philippine HEIs

Nominations to this award shall be made/endorsed by the school administrators, or heads of professional, academic, or honor societies, with the following requirements:
a) endorsement letter from the nominator
b) comprehensive biodata
c) copy of publication/pre-print based on his/her research/thesis/study
d) Transcript of Records
e) certification from co-author/s allowing the nominee to present the paper
f) certification from co-authors on the extent of the role of the nominee in the research/thesis/study, or from the nominator/endorser in case of sole authorship
g) relative standing of the nominee in his/her batch
h) 15-minute video presentation of his/her research/thesis/study

The Criteria for judging are as follows:
(1) Person (20%)
(2) Output (80%)

• Methodology (20%)
• Quality of innovativeness/originality/creativity (15%)
• Quality of write-up of the submitted research/thesis/study document/s (15%)
• Contribution to science/technology knowledge and/or impact on Philippine business and industry (30%)

The First, Second and Third Prize winners will receive a cash prize of Php 100,000.00, Php 50,000.00 and Php 30,000.00, respectively and plaque of recognition from NAST. The special citations will receive a cash prize of Php 10,000.00 each and a plaque of recognition.

The screening and selection of awardees are conducted by the Magsaysay Future Engineers/Technologists Award Board of Judges

All decisions rendered by the board are deemed final and irrevocable upon release.

DOST-IPA Granted Patent/Utility Model Award

The DOST-Intellectual Property Awards - Granted Patent and Utility Model Registration Award are given in recognition of the efforts of DOST technology developers whose technologies have been granted patent or utility model registration in the last three (3) years preceding the award.

A. Requirements:

1. The technology developer should be an employee of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). Former employee/s of DOST should provide a certification that he/she has been part of the DOST agency.
2. The Granted Patent and Utility Model certificate and registrability reports issued by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) should indicate the investor’s/maker’s affiliation as “Department of Science and Technology, Philippines” or “DOST Philippines”.
3. Foreign Utility Model registration should be accompanied by a copy of the certificate of registration as verified by the Bureau of Patents of IPOPHL.
4. Photocopy of the patent/utility model documents.
5. Endorsement letter from the nominator.

B. Incentive:

Granted Patent  - ₱ 80,000.00
Utility Model Registration - ₱ 15,000.00

The deadline for submission of nominations is every last working day of June in the year of the award.

The screening and selection of awardees are conducted by the Granted Patent/Utility Model Advisory Board (GPUMAB).

All decisions rendered by the GPUMAB are deemed final and irrevocable upon release.

DOST-IPA International Publication Award

The DOST Intellectual Property Award - International Publication Award (DOST IPA-IPub) is given annually to scientists and researchers of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) who were able to publish their research outputs in Web of Science/Clarivate Analytics or Scopus indexed journals in the last three (3) years before the year of the nomination.

A. Criteria:

1. The researcher should be an employee of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) or its attached agencies or regional offices. Former employee/s of DOST should provide a certification that in the year of publication of the article he/she was on active service or the work was done before retirement or resignation from the DOST.
   
   
2. The article should indicate the author’s affiliation as “Department of Science and Technology” or “DOST”. Accepted format:
   ● DOST-(agency acronym)
   ● DOST-(agency name in full)
   ● Department of Science and Technology-(agency acronym)
   ● Department of Science and Technology-(agency name in full)
   ● Department of Science and Technology, (agency name in full)
   Sample: Department of Science and Technology, National Academy of Science and Technology, Bicutan, Taguig City
   
   
3. Accepted entries are the following:
   A. Research papers related to the agency’s mandates
   B. Research papers derived from the projects of the agency
   C. Research papers resulted from a PhD dissertation related to the agency’s mandates certified by the nominating agency.
   D. Maximum of two (2) entries by an author from the same conference proceedings.
   E. Review papers
   
   
4. Not eligible for the awards are the following:
   A. Research papers not related to the agency’s mandates
   B. Research papers published in predatory journals
   C. Clickable affiliation on the internet. Affiliation of the authors should be visible in the submitted copy
   D. Data in Brief
   E. Genome papers without genomic analysis
   F. Multiple publications with the same data set

B. Checklist of Requirements:

1. Endorsement letter from the nominator.
2. Copy of the research paper.
3. Certificate of Employment (COE) issued in the year of the award. One COE per entry.
4. For researchers under the Career Incentive Program (CIP), S&T Fellows Program, and those designated as Associate or Assistant Scientists - endorsement letters from both their mother agency and their place of assignment.
5. For former employees - certification that he/she is on active service when the paper was published or the work was done before separation.
6. Screenshot of the journal from the website of Web of Science/Clarivate Analytics or Scopus.
7. Bank details of the corresponding author for the transfer of cash incentives in case the entry is accepted.

C. Incentives:

1. 1. Use of Journal Quartile or Impact Factor, whichever is higher, as the basis of the cash prize (refer to table below). The Journal Quartiles (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4) refer to a system that ranks journals according to their impact and influence within a particular field of research. The Impact Factor (IF) is a metric used to evaluate the significance or influence of a journal in a specific field.
   Annex A. Quartile Table
   If a paper qualifies under different categories for Journal Quartile and Impact Factor, the financial award will be based on the category offering the higher monetary incentive.
   For example:
   ● If Paper 1 was published in a Q1 Journal with an impact factor of 3.5, Paper 1 will receive ₱100,000.
   ● If Paper 2 was published in a Q4 Journal with an impact factor of 1.18, Paper 2 will receive ₱60,000.
2. Accepted Review Papers published in journals with a quartile ranking and impact factor will be given ₱20,000.
3. For papers with multiple authors, the cash incentive and additional cash incentive will be divided equally by the number of authors (local and foreign), but only those who are DOST-affiliated will be given the cash award.
4. The top ten (10) entries with the highest impact factors (at least 3) will receive a Special Citation without a cash incentive.

The screening and selection of awardees are conducted by the National Content Selection Advisory Board (NCSAB).

 All decisions rendered by the NCSAB are deemed final and irrevocable upon release.

DOST-IPA Industrial Design Award

The DOST Intellectual Property Awards - Industrial Design Award are given in recognition of the efforts of DOST industrial designers whose designs have been filed for industrial design registration in the last four (4) years preceding the award.

A. Requirements:

1. The Industrial Designers should be either an employee of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) or former employee/s of DOST. Former employee/s should provide a certification that he/she has been part of the DOST agency at the time of filing the industrial design application to Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL).
2. Photocopy of the Industrial Design Registration Certificate and Registrability Report issued by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL).
3. Industrial Designs registered abroad should submit a copy of the certificate of registration. The Bureau of Patents of IPOPHL shall provide information regarding the registration as verifiable online.
4. The Industrial Design certificates and registrability reports issued by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) should indicate the designers’ affiliation as “Department of Science and Technology” or “DOST”. The same document should contain no adverse finding/s.
5. The Industrial Design certificates and registrability reports issued by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) should reflect technical novelty. Entries with the same novel features and title are subject for disqualification.
6. Endorsement letter from the nominator.

B. Incentive:

Type of Registration - Industrial Design
Cash Incentive = P 10,000.00

The screening and selection of awardees are conducted by the Industrial Design Advisory Board (IDAB).

All decisions rendered by the IDAB are deemed final and irrevocable upon release.

DOST-NSTW Outstanding Science Administrator Award (Dioscoro L. Umali Medal) 

The award is given in recognition of S&T or R&D administrators who have made significant contributions to science and technology through effective management and implementation of plans and programs. The S&T or R&D administrator may come from the academe, private sector, or government.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION

The Outstanding Science Administrator awardee will be chosen by the Board of Judges.
The following are the criteria for evaluation:

• Contribution to technological development and dissemination (40%)
• Resource generation activities, including HRD and networking (30%)
• Dedication, commitment, and leadership (15%)
• Acceptance of peers and colleagues (15%)

GUIDELINES

a) The award is open to all Filipino heads of S&T and/or R&D agencies or institutions from the academe, private sector, or government
b) He/She must have been holding the said position for at least two (2) years before the award.
c) Candidates should be nominated by the heads of government or private institutions with the following requirements:

• Comprehensive bio-data
• Accomplishments or contributions to S&T or R&D management in terms of projects implemented, resources generated, and the like
• Effectiveness in fulfilling the mission and objectives of his/her institution

d) The Board of Judges may, if found necessary, interview the candidates
e) Decisions of the Board of Judges shall be final and unappealable.
f) The Board of Judges has the right not to declare any winner

THE PRIZE

The award consists of a cash award, a medal, and a plaque.

The screening and selection of awardees are conducted by the Outstanding Science Administrator Award Board of Judges.

All decisions rendered by the board are deemed final and irrevocable upon release.

DOST-NSTW Outstanding Research and Development AwardEduardo A. Quisumbing Medal (for Basic Research) & Julian A. Banzon Medal (for Applied Research) 

The award is given to individuals/groups who have made outstanding contributions through research. Two types of awards will be given, namely: (1) Basic Research and (2) Applied Research. 

For Basic Research, entries may come from any of the following fields:
1. Mathematical (Computer Science)
2. Physical (Physics, Chemistry, etc.)
3. Life Sciences (Biology, Botany, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, etc.) 

For Applied Research, entries may come from any of the following fields: 
1. Agriculture (including Aquaculture and Forestry) 
2. Industry and Engineering (Energy, Environment, Earth Science, Textile, Pharmaceuticals, Process, Mining and Minerals, Materials Science, Transportation, Wood and Wood Products, Construction, Electronics, Information Technology, Engineering Technologies)
3. Health and Social Sciences (Economics, Health, Nutrition, Science Education, other Social Sciences) 

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION 

The Outstanding Research and Development awardee will be chosen by the Board of Judges. The Board of Judges will formulate their own guidelines of judging based on the suggested criteria: 

● Creativity and originality of research work 
● Suitability of experimental design and appropriateness of methodology 
● Substantiveness of data 
● Clarity of presentation (conciseness, appropriate use of labels and figures, technical accuracy of language, definition of terms) 
● Interpretation of results 
● Overall impact of research (immediate or potential) on socio-economic development, contribution to scientific knowledge 

GUIDELINES 

a) The contest is open to all Filipino researchers or research groups with Filipinos as the principal investigators. The composition or leader of the research group should be documented. 
b) Research should have been conducted mainly in the Philippines and completed within a period of three (3) years preceding the award. 
c) Papers may either be basic or applied. 
d) Papers to be considered or completed research must have been published or refereed for publication or should have been accepted for publication in a scientific or technological journal. 
e) Original copies of reprints and monographs of entries including the abstract should be submitted. Entries should state the category of award under which they wish to compete. 
f) Nominations should include a certification endorsed by the nominator that he/she is the principal author of the research entry. 
g) Nominations may be made by heads of government or private research institutions, departments of colleges or universities, or academic/professional scientific organizations or societies. 
h) The Board of Judges may, if found necessary, schedule a paper presentation and interview and candidates. 
i) Decisions of the Board of Judges shall be final and unappealable. 
j) The Board of Judges has the right not to declare any winner. 

THE PRIZE 

Winner of each category will receive a cash prize, medal and a plaque.

The screening and selection of awardees are conducted by the Outstanding Research and Development Award Board of Judges.

All decisions rendered by the board are deemed final and irrevocable upon release.

DOST-NSTW Outstanding Technology Commercialization Award (Gregorio Y. Zara Medal) 

The award is given in recognition of the efforts of technology generators and developers whose technologies have been commercialized. Only one award will be given every year. 

Entries may come from any of the following such as: 

• Agriculture (including Fisheries and Forestry) 
• Industry and Engineering (Energy, Environment, Earth Science, Textile, Process, Mining and Minerals, Materials Science, Transportation, Wood and Wood Products, Construction) 
• Health and Nutrition and Related Pharmaceuticals and Social Sciences 
• Information Communications Technology (ICT), Multimedia, Electronics, Software, etc. 

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION 

The Outstanding Technology Commercialization awardee will be chosen by the Board of Judges. The Board of Judges will formulate their own guidelines of judging based on the suggested criteria: 

• Contribution to technological development 

1. originality/novelty/usefulness, innovation/adaptation (Patentability) 
2. potential for local value-added 

• Commercialization Scale (Profitability and Productivity) 
• Use of environment-friendly materials/technology 
• Direct benefits to the public 
• Presentation of Paper 

GUIDELINES

a) The contest is open to all technologists and inventors who are Filipino citizens 
b) Technology must have been commercialized within ten (10) years (from point of adoption) preceding the award 
c) Each entry must have a write-up on his/her technology which is incorporated in the nomination document. 
d) Nominations may be made by heads of government or private research institutions, departments of colleges or universities, or academic/professional organizations or societies. 
e) The Board of Judges may, if found necessary, visit the plant/s commercializing the technology and interview the candidates 
f) Decisions of the Board of Judges shall be final and unappealable. 
g) The Board of Judges has the right not to declare any winner. 

THE PRIZE 

Winner will receive a cash prize, medal and a plaque. 

The screening and selection of awardees are conducted by the Outstanding Technology Commercialization Award Board of Judges.

All decisions rendered by the board are deemed final and irrevocable upon release.

The Outstanding Young Scientist (OYS) Awards are given to young Filipino scientists (must not be 41 years old within January to December in the year of the awarding) who have made significant contributions to science and technology.

A total of twelve (12) OYS Awards are available annually, split among the following divisions:

• Agricultural Sciences
• Biological Sciences
• Mathematical and Physical Sciences
• Engineering Sciences and Technology
• Health Sciences
• Social Sciences

The award consists of a trophy and a cash prize.

A nominee must be:
(a) A Filipino citizen;
(b) Must NOT be forty-one (41) years old or older within January to December in the year of the awarding
(c) Of exceptional ability to undertake scientific research as evidenced by papers published in reputable scientific journals; and
(d) Of good moral character.

Judging is based on:
(a) Quality and number of scientific works and publications
(b) Contributions to the advancement of science in general and science in the Philippines, in particular; and
(c) Contributions to the well-being of the Philippine economy and culture. Nominations for these awards may be made by heads of government or private research institutions, departments of colleges or universities, or academic or professional scientific organizations or societies.

The deadline for submission of nominations is every last working day of November.

Checklist of Requirements:
1. College-level, higher degree and graduate level, undergraduate diplomas and transcripts of records
2. PSA Birth Certificate
3. Three (3) most important research publications
4. Two-minute video explaining the importance of S&T contributions of the nominee to society
5. Article about the nominee and his/her scientific and technical contributions to society in not more than 1,000 words
6. Five (5) high resolution photographs with captions depicting the nominee’s present scientific work

The NAST Environmental Science Award is intended to recognize outstanding scientific and technological research work that contributes to environmental protection and conservation. The nominee should be able to show strength in using the interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary approach needed in environmental science.

With the rapid pace of environmental degradation and the possible eventual depletion of our natural resources, it is vital that the remaining resources be used wisely and that pollution and contamination be prevented for the benefit of today’s and future generations.

The grand prize winner will receive a cash prize and plaque of recognition from the Academy. Winners of special citations will receive plaques of recognition.

Candidates nominated must be:

(a) Filipino citizen;
(b) Affiliated with any of the following:

• Scientific society (academic or professional);
• Research institution or firm (government or private);
• College or university;
• Environmental organization
• Any other relevant non-governmental organization;

(c) Able to present a scientific paper (published or unpublished) during a science congress scheduled before or during the Earth Day celebration.
The involvement of the nominee in the research should be explained if the paper is jointly authored;
(d) Community work in one’s field and involvement in advocacy and information dissemination; and
(e) Of good moral character.

Nominations to this award may be made by the heads of government or private research institutions, departments, institutes of colleges or universities, academic or professional scientific organizations, societies, non-government organizations, or environmental organizations.

Decisions of the Board of Judges shall be final and not appealable.

The NAST Talent Search for Young Scientists is a project of NAST to encourage young people to pursue a career in science.

Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the best three scientific paper presenters. The paper for presentation may be basic or applied research.

Candidates nominated must be:
(a) Filipino citizens;
(b) Must not be more than thirty-five (35) years old within January to December in the year of the awarding;
(c) Graduates of at least a master's degree;
(d) Of good moral character;
(e) Affiliated with any of the following:

• scientific society (academic or professional)
• research institution or firm (government or private)
• college/university;

(f) Able to present a scientific paper (ISI/Scopus published or accepted for publication in major journals) which he/she is a major contributor in a public forum, which will be scheduled for this purpose. The involvement of the nominee in the research should be explained if the paper is jointly authored.

Nominations for this award may be made by heads of government or private research institutions, departments of colleges or universities, or academic or professional scientific organizations or societies.

The deadline for submission of nominations is every last working day of November.

Checklist of Requirements:

These awards are given annually for books and/or monographs published by Filipino publishers based in the Philippines within five years preceding the award. Majority of the authors of the publication should be Filipino.
Plaques of recognition will be awarded to the author/s of books or monographs adjudged to be outstanding in the field of:

• Agricultural Sciences
• Biological Sciences
• Mathematical and Physical Sciences
• Engineering Sciences and Technology
• Health Sciences
• Social Sciences

Books or monographs will be judged for the quality and originality of their content, contribution to science and technology, clarity of presentation, and thoroughness of documentation.

Nominations may be made by editors of journals and/or publications, and heads of scientific societies/organizations

Please submit twelve (12) copies of the book or monograph.

The deadline for submission of nominations is every last working day of November.

These awards are given annually for papers published in Thomson Reuters or SCOPUS listed journals in the Philippines within five years preceding the award.

Plaques of recognition will be awarded to the author/s of papers adjudged to be outstanding in the fields of:

• Agricultural Sciences
• Biological Sciences
• Engineering Sciences and Technology
• Mathematical and Physical Sciences
• Health Sciences
• Social Sciences

Papers will be judged for the quality of their content, contribution to science and technology, clarity of presentation, and thoroughness of documentation.

Nominations may be made by editors of journals and/or publications, and heads of scientific societies/organizations

The NAST Award for Outstanding Research in Tropical Medicine (NAORTM) is intended to recognize outstanding research works that contribute to the advancement of the country’s knowledge and practice in Tropical Medicine.

Objectives
• To honor outstanding research contributions to the field of Tropical Medicine
• To recognize the role of scientific research in the country’s development

Procedure
The NAORTM will be given annually during the celebration of Health Month. It will follow a two-step process. The first step is open to all individuals or groups engaged in scientific and technological research (basic or applied) that focuses on Tropical Medicine. Only the aspirants who pass the screening by the Board of Judges will be asked to present their papers to the Science Congress to be held during the Annual Convention of the Manila Medical Society.

The Board of Judges will select the most outstanding research paper presented at the Science Congress. The winner will receive the NAST Award for Outstanding Research in Tropical Medicine, which will include a plaque of recognition and cash prize.

Candidate Qualifications
1. Filipino citizen
2. Affiliated with any of the following:

• Scientific society (academic or professional);
• Research institution or firm (government or private);
• College or university;
• Non-government organization

3. Able to present a scientific paper (published or unpublished, completed within the last three [3] years prior to the award) during a science congress scheduled during the Annual Convention of the Manila Medical Society. The involvement of the nominee in the research should be explained if the paper is jointly authored. 

Nominations to this award may be made by the heads of government or private research institutions, departments, institutes of colleges or universities, academic or professional scientific organizations, societies, non-government organizations, or environmental organizations.
